Hump Reduction
in Korea

A bump on the bridge can make you look stronger or older than you are.
We create a smooth, flowing profile that softens your entire impression.

Result

A dorsal hump (aquiline nose) is caused by excess growth of bone and cartilage on the nasal bridge. It often disrupts the sleek line of the profile and, when combined with a droopy tip, creates a "Witch" or "Eagle" appearance.

Hump Reduction is not just about "shaving the bone." If you simply cut the top off, the nose bridge becomes wide and flat (Open Roof Deformity).

Korean specialists perform a "Structural Hump Removal," which involves shaving the hump AND narrowing the side bones (Osteotomy) to maintain a slim, defined bridge line.

The Korean Difference: "No Flat Bridges"

Why shaving is not enough.

Crucial Step

Lateral Osteotomy

After removing a large hump, the nose looks like a "cut plateau." We fracture the side bones inward to close this roof and keep the bridge slim.

Harmony

Tip Lifting

A hump often comes with a drooping tip. We almost always lift the tip (Tip Plasty) simultaneously to create a straight or slightly curved line.

Material

Minimal Implant

Sometimes, after removing a hump, the bridge is too low. We use a very thin layer (implant or dermis) to ensure a perfectly smooth surface.

Do I Need Hump Reduction?

Diagnosis depends on the size of the bump.

Mild Hump

  • Condition: A small bump is visible only in profile view.
  • Cause: Slight overgrowth of cartilage.
  • Solution: Simple Rasping (Filing/Shaving) - No bone breaking required.

Severe / Bony Hump

  • Condition: A large, hard bump that makes the nose look hooked.
  • Cause: Excess nasal bone + Upper lateral cartilage.
  • Solution: Osteotomy (Cutting) + Infracture (Closing the roof).

Pseudo-Hump (Low Radix)

  • Condition: The hump looks big because the starting point (radix) between the eyes is too low.
  • Solution: Instead of cutting the hump, we fill the low area (Radix Graft) to smooth the line.

Surgical Techniques

Precision tools for a smooth finish.

For Small Humps

Rasping (Shaving)

We use a medical-grade file (rasp) to gently sand down the protruding bone. It is precise, causes less swelling, and requires no bone fracturing.

  • Best For: Minor bumps (~1-2mm).
  • Recovery: Very fast (minimal bruising).
For Large Humps

Osteotomy & Infracture

For large humps, we use an ultrasonic piezotome or chisel to cleanly cut the excess bone. Then, we perform Lateral Osteotomy (breaking the side walls) to push the bones inward, preventing a wide, flat bridge.

  • Best For: True Eagle Noses.
  • Benefit: Creates a slim, high-definition bridge.

Rasping vs. Osteotomy

Feature Rasping (Shaving) Osteotomy (Cutting)
Target Surface Irregularity Structural Hump
Invasiveness Low High (Bone Fracture)
Bruising Minor (Yellowish) Moderate (Purple/Blue around eyes)
Risk Under-correction Open Roof (if not closed properly)
Estimated Cost $3,000 ~ $4,500 $5,000 ~ $7,500

* Osteotomy usually requires general anesthesia or deep sedation.

Recovery Timeline

Bone healing takes a bit more time.

Day 1-3

Swelling & Packing

If osteotomy was performed, expect bruising around the eyes (raccoon eyes). Nasal packing is essential.

Day 7

Cast Removal

The external splint protecting the fractured bone is removed. The bridge will look swollen but straight.

2-3 W

Bruise Fading

Eye bruising disappears. Bones are semi-stable but you must avoid glasses or impact.

6 W

Bone Union

The fractured bones are fully healed and stable. You can wear glasses again.

Safety Protocols

Preventing the "Saddle Nose" collapse.

Avoid "Open Roof"

If the hump is cut without narrowing the sides, the bridge feels flat like a runway. We always perform infracture to maintain a triangular peak.

Prevent Regrowth

Bone has a memory. We rasp the periosteum (bone covering) thoroughly to prevent the hump from growing back (rare but possible).

Smoothness Check

We often place a thin layer of fascia or crushed cartilage over the shaved area to ensure no jagged edges are felt under the skin.

FAQ

Common questions, answered clearly.

Will the hump grow back?
It is very rare. However, callus formation during bone healing can create a tiny bump. We use anti-inflammatory measures and precise filing to minimize this risk.
Does it hurt more than regular rhinoplasty?
Breaking the bone (osteotomy) sounds scary, but it doesn't cause significantly more pain. However, there will be more bruising around the eyes compared to implant-only surgery.
Can I just get fillers?
Fillers can camouflage a mild hump by filling the area above and below it. However, this makes the nose bigger overall. Surgery is the only way to make the nose smaller.
