What Is

Square Jaw Reduction (Mandibuloplasty) reshapes the mandibular angle (the corner of the jaw under the ear).

A "square" look is often caused by three factors: Protruding Bone, Thick Cortical Bone (width), and Masseter Muscle.

Top-tier Korean techniques do not just chop off the corner. We perform a "Long-Curved" cut to prevent secondary angles and remove the outer layer of the bone (Cortical Resection) to maximize the frontal slimming effect.

Nerve Safety

Inferior Alveolar Nerve

The nerve line dictates the limit of resection. We use 3D-CT to map this nerve and leave a safety margin to prevent permanent numbness.

Frontal Effect

Cortical Bone Resection

Cutting the angle only changes the side profile. We remove the outer bone layer to slim the face from the front view.

Smooth Line

Long-Curve Technique

Old methods created a "dog-ear" or secondary angle. We cut in a continuous smooth curve toward the chin.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Is your jaw wide due to bone, muscle, or fat? Diagnosis comes first.

Structural Indicators

  • The jaw angle under the ear is close to 90 degrees.
  • The lower face looks wide and masculine.
  • One side of the jaw is larger/lower than the other (Asymmetry).

Muscle vs. Bone

  • Bone Type: Hard feeling when clenching teeth. Needs Surgery.
  • Muscle Type: Bulges significantly when clenching. Needs Botox or Muscle Reduction.
  • Combined: Most common case. Needs Long-curve + Muscle reduction.

V-Line vs. Jaw Reduction?

Jaw Reduction treats the back angle.
V-Line treats the back angle + the chin tip.

Surgical Approach (The Korean Standard)

We combine three procedures to ensure maximum slimness.

Step 1

Long-Curved Osteotomy

Instead of a straight cut which leaves a "step," the bone is resected in a long, continuous curve from below the ear extending near the chin area.

  • Natural profile line (No "surgical look")
  • Connects smoothly to the chin
Step 2

Cortical Bone Resection (CBR)

The jawbone has three layers. We carefully shave off the outermost layer. This reduces the actual width/thickness of the jaw.

  • Critical for "Frontal View" slimness
  • Requires high surgical skill to avoid nerve damage
Step 3

Masseter Muscle Reduction (High Frequency)

If the muscle is overly developed, we use high-frequency energy to shrink the muscle volume from the inside during the surgery.

  • Semi-permanent effect compared to Botox
  • Prevents the "bulging" look

Jaw Reduction Comparison

Method Effectiveness Duration Recovery
Jaw Botox Muscle only 3-6 Months None
Square Jaw Surgery Bone + Muscle (Permanent) Permanent 1-2 Weeks
Cortical Resection Only Front width only Permanent 1 Week
Estimated Cost $4,500 ~ $8,000

* Prices vary depending on whether Cortical Resection and Muscle Reduction are included.

Recovery Timeline

Jaw surgery recovery is faster than you think, but patience is required for the final shape.

Day 1-3

Swelling Peak

Face will be swollen. A compression bandage is worn. Soft liquid diet only.

Day 7

Stitch Removal

Intraoral stitches are removed or dissolve. Most patients return to desk jobs.

1 Mo

70% Deswelling

The "chipmunk" look fades. You can start eating normal (soft) food. Mouth opening exercises begin.

6 Mo

Slim Result

The remaining 10-20% of minor swelling disappears, revealing the sharp bone line.

Safety & Risks

We believe in informed consent. Here are the risks we manage.

Nerve Injury

The inferior alveolar nerve runs through the jaw. Damage can cause numbness. Prevention: Precise CT planning and safety margins.

Secondary Angle

If the cut is too straight, a new angle forms halfway down the jaw. Prevention: Long-curved osteotomy technique.

Condyle Fracture

Rare. Stress on the jaw joint during surgery. Prevention: Careful manipulation and experienced surgeons.

Asymmetry

Post-op swelling may look uneven. True asymmetry is minimized by measuring bone resection weight/size.

FAQ

Common questions, answered clearly.

Will I have sagging skin after jaw reduction?
Jaw reduction has a lower risk of sagging than cheekbone surgery. However, if a large amount of bone is removed in older patients, some laxity may occur. In such cases, we recommend a simultaneous lifting procedure.
Can I chew normally after surgery?
You should avoid tough meats, jerky, or hard nuts for 1-2 months. During the first week, stick to porridge, smoothies, and soft soups.
Do I need to remove stitches?
All incisions are made inside the mouth. These stitches usually dissolve within 2 weeks, but we may remove them at Day 7-10 for hygiene and faster healing.
Does this surgery affect my teeth?
No. The surgery is performed on the border of the jawbone, far away from the tooth roots. Dental occlusion (bite) remains unchanged.
